This was the annual memorial
pairs match remembering Kevin Warner for the forth year...

1st. Steve Sams, Elite Baits-Old Hatfield Angling
peg 14 57-08-0
This was a bloody horrible windy day in which poles were broken and fish
were lost due to awful bait presentation it was a job to know what to do for the
best, Steve managed to some how net a summer weight and this didn't include any
bonus carp just tench and bream on the short pole at 5m with caster to the hook
and 3 pints loose fed throughout the match. 26 anglers fished the match, and the
anglers were split into two sections one team member in each section, points one
to thirteen were alocated to each angler according to position in section, 1pt
for a win and 13pts for last in section, there were also three individual
prize's in section which Sams scooped in section one...
2nd. Steve Thorn, Terrapins
peg 10 50-00-0
Steve managed to land two carp in his catch and this placed him and his
partner Andy Gregory in good stead for the pairs place overall, the wind faired
a little better on this bank and enabled Steve to fish the pole at 13m, he also
fished the whole match in a T-shirt thats how extreme the condition were on the
lake, the right hand bank was like a summers day and the left hand bank was just
hell.
3rd. George Manoli, Lake John
peg 32 39-08-0
George returns back on the Sunday scene, this memorial marks the end of the
winter league and Sunday open matches until next year anyway, pellet head Manoli
fished down the rushes in the inner margins securing a bonus carp and a net full
of mixed fish all on the long pole fishing with the wind...
That was the top three indivduals and now
the top three pairs and there points

1st. Ken Farrell, Browning-Lake John
peg 13 36-13-0
Kenny's back, this was on the cards because over the past few weeks Ken has
started to sort it out on the lake and has been up there for a little while, the
feeder was the line of attack for the early part of the match and by the mid way
mark it was over to the long pole which was made very difficult to use because
of the strong winds that were gusting all over the lake, tench, bream, skimmers
and one bonus carp of 10lb made up Mr. Farrell's top weight, but this was yet
another trade mark close match and he only just got away with it, well done
Kenny...
2nd. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle
peg 11 34-00-0
Another good draw on a horrible windy day, it was extra line added to the
pole rig and a 1gram float to hold the bottom fishing 6" over depth, the bait
had to be still for it to effective, pellet to the hook on the long pole at 13m
for a days sport fish of skimmers and a couple of bream, the tip was bite less
all match what a waste of time.
3rd. Martin Amos, Elite Baits-Old Hatfield Angling

1st. Martin Amos, Elite Baits-Old Hatfield Angling
peg 13 32-02-0
The Amos is back on top of his game and on yet another wet and wild windy
day, Martin's long pole and pellet is deadly when conditions allow and it had to
be hard work in these winds to maintain the correct presentation that it would
require to gain the edge over the Diawa Dorking man sitting next to him, better
stamp skimmers and bonus tench were back on this side of the lake.
2nd. Steve Clark, Image
peg 11 29-12-0
Long pole and pellet again for Steve on the 13m line the gusting winds
always cost you fish and one bonus fish was all it would take to separate a 1st
from a 2nd place.
3rd. Bob Jarvis, Old Hatfield Angling
peg 3 27-13-0
My mate bisto Bob was not far off the pace and in fact lost a couple of fish
also, this bank had the wind blowing directly into it, and with the rain as well
you should have seen the state of him by the end of the match, in my mind mate
you won just on the strength that you sat there and suffered it, my hero.

It was all to play for on this the last week of the winter series and it would only take one good result from anyone and the predictable early rounds could soon be upturned...
26 Fished
1st. Bob Jarvis, Old Hatfield Angling
peg 4 32-14-0
Bisto Bob proved again that he is different gravey, fishing the long pole
with positive pellet to the hook Bob had at last drawn a peg he could shine on,
this fishing lark is all about a bit of luck and hard work, so with the luck
part of the day achived he then had to put a few fish together, the conditions
were ideal for a bag of skimmers and a few bonus bits and bobs, well that's
exactly what happened and being in the pairs this was the sort of result that
could change fortunes, Bob and his team mate Dave Massey were at the bottom
coming into this round but not for long.
2nd. Dean Hunt, Terrapins
peg 30 25-10-0
This is my team mate and Dean pulled through to save the day as I spiralled
off the chart this week and accumulated a massive amount of points, Dean fished
the long pole but didn't have it too easy though because for the most of the
match he was biteless but the bonus carp came to his rescue and with the first
one bagged by 12 o'clock it would be another one 10 minutes before the end that
would clinch a massive points advantage in the pairs stake,
3rd. Martin Amos, Elite Baits-Old Hatfield
peg 14 22-04-0
This was a good result for Martin and the points would keep him right up
there, this was another carp that saved his bacon, cold water keeps going in the
lake and the end result has been that the fish seem to slow down, I think we
will be fishing for the roach from now on until the rain eases!, Martin hooked a
bonus carp on his light skimmer tackle on the long pole and pellet was hooked
and fed, he played the fish out for just over an hour but if they come in the
count.

About time!, bonus fish on the pellet long pole.
2nd. Steve Sams, Elite Baits-Hatfield Angling
peg 35 30-04-0
Steve was giving me stick all morning about how he’s going to bash me and
throwing down side bets to draw me in, and it worked because the side bet was a
pound and the banter began, I told him to put his mum’s number on speed dial in
his phone because before the match was over he was gonna need comforting, It has
to be said that he took off like a whippet but as my mate Len Goulding says
“remember the tortoise and the hair”, well Steve hooked everything in his swim
from roach to tench, and probably had more fish than me but they didn’t weigh as
much did they, unlucky Steve then had to very publicly hand over the quid, and
that was very lovely unlucky Sams next week bring a box of pain killers and a
hard back book down your strides so when you next get smacked it don’t hurt so
much, but next week its for the title.
3rd. Alex Roberts, Middy
peg 3 29-04-0
Small fish from the off close in and not to much on the long trusted pellet
line, rudd and roach were a big part of Alex’s weight and for nearly three hours
he kept these coming, so another three hours and a clear victory would have been
insight.

one more practice match before it really counts…
The top six on the day
22 Fished
1st. Joe Robinson, Ringers Baits
peg 14 32-10-0 NL
Joe had a different approach today and that was to throw out on the tip
because after trying for most of the morning the pole line seemed biteless the
tip started to work small fish soon turned into one bonus carp which awarded Joe
with a 10lb advantage, switching back onto the pole was still proving very slow
and it was just past the mid match mark that Joe secured another carp on the
tip, 10lb more would be added to his small fish weight and popped just enough on
the scale to beat his travel partner Danny, this is two wins out of two now…
2nd. Danny Fung, Hertford
peg 9 32-00-0 NL
Danny has made a successful come back to the lake and over the past few
weeks has always been up there in the rankings, pellet on the long pole and
plenty of feed was Danny’s method of attack and it took about an hour to get the
peg warmed up and then it was a steady trickle of fish throughout the day,
skimmers and bream.
3rd. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle
peg 4 28-08-0
I had a feeling that I might draw this peg today and was a bit unsure of its
ability, I have never sat on this peg before in my life so there was nothing to
lose, positive pellet was my approach and with 4mm expander to the hook it was
as simple as that, skimmers at first and then a couple of bonus bream and one
big tench of 4lb helped out no end, as the match went on the peg just got better
and with two bonus fish bumped off the hook you could say I was a little upset
but I didn’t swear!.................. honest!

Baits-Old Hatfield Angling peg 14
32-06-0
On an absolute flyer of a peg he should have
won, there was very little skill involved the peg is full of fish he should have
had double that lucky old Steve, Steve drew this peg last week and only had 15lb
so what a difference a week can make, the tip was put out but only produced tiny
skimmers on the maggot it wasn’t until the pole was given some attention that
the damage really started to happen, 4mm pellet was the fancy for the bonus
skimmers and bream and just for good measure takes the maximum league points as
well
2nd.
Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B
Tackle
peg 41 30-10-0
This is a much un-fancied peg at the moment but
it just goes to show how this lake can throw a weight up from anywhere, it was
nearly 2 hours into the match before the first bite and then lucky for me the
fish that arrived were the better bonus fish from 1lb to 3lb very pleasant day
after what I thought was going to be a bad day, it was a positive approach
fishing 4mm expander pellet over a bed of micro pellet.

26-06-0
Into the intense stages of his London Marathon training Mat has dedicated
himself to early morning running, so he was definitely bright eyed and bushy
tailed for the match ahead, Mat started on the feeder and caught immediately not
big fish but action from the off is always a good thing so switching from
pole to feeder Mat bagged up on yet another blustery day, maggot to the hook on
the feeder and maggot on the pole line with a bit of ground bait, two tench and
a bonus 4lb bream accompanied a bag of silver skimmers.
2nd. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle
peg 32 16-08-0
The feeder was never going to be an option for me so watching Mat plugging
away gave him a massive heads up before the halfway mark, but peg 32 is a corner
peg and this isn’t anywhere you can throw it so it was a full pole attack long
with pellet and short with the caster, small fish mainly but a fair days fishing
and a bit of banter as well that’s twice this week I have sat next to the
winner, Mick Scanlan on Wednesday and now Mat its not good for the ego.

More cold rain during the night and a slight dip in the temperature put the
fish in hiding a little bit but on a sell out match, this was yet another close
match which the lake is known for, Mr Briggs played it cool and just kept
plugging away which he does with ease and it has to be said on a very consistent
peg at the moment this relative new comer did it just about right, small silvers
with one bonus tench, so it was second last time here and now a first.

Results for Sunday 7th January 2007
This was the last practise match before the Sunday open league begins, and the pecking order was starting to show its self, who will pair with who is the question?, pairs will be drawn this coming Sunday morning…
22 Fished
1st. Steve Sams, Elite Baits-Hatfield Angling
peg 36 31-08-0
Steve Hasn’t fished the top lake lately due to work commitments and over the
Christmas break we saw his return and in only a couple of matches he was back up
there in the top ranks again, with gusting winds there was only one thing for
it. it would have to be short pole and pellet, the normal long pole line is 13m
but in these conditions it was less than half that at 6m, tench skimmers and
bream were the target fish and with plenty of feed Steve managed to keep a few
fish interested, but only just did enough to hold on to first place.
2nd. Steve Briggs, Terrapins
peg 9 30-10-0
Steve hasn’t been here for a long, long time but with a bit of info
downloaded in the café over breakfast, was soon to pay dividends, caster was the
approach with a bit of pellet on a longer pole than Sams due to the fact the
conditions on this bank were slightly better, but it has to be said that Steve
done good.
3rd. Alan Spooner, Hatfield Angling
peg 34 20-12-0
Long pole was impossible for Alan so it was mainly tip work chucking short
of the island, skimmers and roach
4th. Ken Farrell, Browning-Lake John
peg 33 20-10-0
5th. Glen Butler, Lake John
peg 11 20-02-0
6th. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle
peg 32 19-08-0

Dennis Jarvis travelled the length of the country to fish today from a short break in Scotland to small lake in Waltham Abbey…
20 Fished
1st. Dennis Jarvis, Pro Master-Trabbucco
peg 33 24-10-0
Den phoned me late afternoon on the Saturday asking if he could get a ticket
for the match the following day, Den has fished the lake for many years and of
course there is always a ticket he then proceeded to tell me that he was in
Scotland and hoped to be there in time for the draw, which he was, and the rest
in a matter of fact, Dennis fished the peg just right and on a wet and very
windy new years eve did just enough to pinch the grand prize, fishing caster on
the long pole down the inner margins, for roach, rudd, perch and bream with a
couple of small tench for good measure, proper days fishing after a long drive I
don’t know how you managed it old chap.
2nd. Colin Bartlett, lake John-J+B Tackle
peg 36 23-08-0
Wasted a bit too much time on the feeder perhaps in the early part of the
match but as the wind got up the long pole was put away and it was caster on the
6m line to which skimmers, roach and perch showed which was a stroke of luck,
because with the mild conditions I had banked on and the pellet on the long pole
it was impossible to fish.
3rd. Mick Scanlan, Fox Match-GOT Baits
peg 32 22-08-0
Have you noticed this bloke is popping up every week at the moment, Dicky
Carr drew this peg last week and the fish seemed to be else where but when Mick
draws a peg the fish soon follow, long pole down the inner margin and at 14m in
the least windy part of the lake. Another pay day.
4th. Terry Barratt, Simpsons of Turnford
peg 9 19-12-0
5th. George Manoli, Lake John
peg 14 19-10-0
Jnt 6th. Glen Butler, Lake John
peg 3 18-12-0
Gary Neal, Palmers Green Angling
peg 26 18-12-0
