This was an important week in the points for the run up to the last leg next week, making the last two rounds a back to back appointment...

Tony Pennycook - Gary Miller
Gary Manoli - Gordon Bullock
Darren Clark - Martin Amos
Mick Herbert - Bob Jarvis
Alan Spooner - Ken Farrell
Dave Massey - Steve Thorn
Paul Reddy - Steve Sams
Colin Tasker - Dean Hunt
Scott Clark - Colin Bartlett
Dennis Jarvis - Graham Hyde

It has taken Mr. Alan Spooner this long to nab a victory but at least he can hold his head up and between him and his partner Ken Farrell they bag a massive 38 points on the day, this is the biggest points total all series

Al on form on the bottom lake this winter, I think he won this match as well, Alan's back...

26 fished

1st. Alan Spooner, Old Hatfield Angling                                peg 39
Al about time mate, you leave it until the end of the series to sort it out, but this good draw also deserved a bit of luck with a great big carp netted mid match and then head down alan proceeded to bag up on the skimmers and bream in front of him on the pellet and long pole, so the hard work came through and Alan would like me to remind you that all the stars were out this week and he beat them all, well done Alan, Bisto Bob will be pleased with you this week.

2nd. Chris Vandervliet, Van Den Eynde-Bromages             peg 12       33-06-0
Truly on form at the moment catching fish in every peg he draw's so well done again another second and if only you were in the winter league you would probably be winning but your not are ya, Aaaaaaarh still there is always next year, oh I also had to give Chris another quid which means I am now down 8-1 its starting to give me the hump but I just keep reminding myself that he used to be good enough to fish for Essex, but that was a long time ago aye mate...

3rd. Len Goulding, Simpsons of Turnford                              peg 16      28-08-0
Lenny makes an appearance this week and with a random draw replaced the Terrapin Micky Herbert for this week only as a stand in and really does the business for his temporary team mate Bob Jarvis gathering a massive 19pts on the day on a peg which has not done too much in the past few weeks, maggot produced the bites and they came in spell's but it was a bonus carp that really saved the day in the form of a 10lb bonus catch and release.

4th. Ken Farrell, Browning-Lake John                                    peg 11       26-06-0

5th. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle                              peg 35       24-12-0

Gary Miller does it again and bag's the biggest net of the winter so far into the bargain, but Miller does the damage on practice week again...

Tony Pennycook - Gary Miller
Gary Manoli - Gordon Bullock
Darren Clark - Martin Amos
Mick Herbert - Bob Jarvis
Alan Spooner - Ken Farrell
Dave Massey - Steve Thorn
Paul Reddy - Steve Sams
Colin Tasker - Dean Hunt
Scott Clark - Colin Bartlett
Dennis Jarvis - Graham Hyde

Its Miller's time and this is the day after he gave Will Raison a tuning on the next peg at Gold Valley with a massive 99lb of carp on the tip.

6th place, Paul Reddy with his 2lb 12oz perch from peg 13,
Its ok everyone just after this picture was taken Paul managed to smile.

23 fished

1st. Gary Miller, Van Den Eynde                                     peg 30              45-04-0
Gary planned an attack short but the fish didn't seem to be on that line until later on in the match, so the long pole with maggot over ground bait catching skimmers and roach just keeping nice and busy, a look on the short line at 7m was full on for the last hour with bream up to 4lb and other net fish constantly, its probably fair to say that the match was won in the last hour, well done Gary you am the man!!

2nd. Martin Amos, Elite baits-Old Hatfield Angling      peg 33              38-04-0
The Amos took off like a champion athlete catching down the edge on pellet, four carp between 2lb and 5lb, and a big'en for the mandatory 10lb, but the peg slowed down in the latter stages and this has cost Martin the match as all he could do was watch the Miller man bagging a few pegs away down the lake, Martin's approach was a carp attack and for the first match this winter this was nearly a carp victory.

3rd. Chris Vandervliet, Van Den Eynde                         peg 36             27-04-0
Chris is still showing form, and with this kind of form he would have been a real contender in the winter league but he jumped ship and didn't join us I bet he is regretting this now, Starting on the feeder Chris winkled out a few bites and there was a slow building of weight quiet quickly on a crumb feeder and maggot to the hook, the pole line was then ready for a look and there were fish on both the long and short lines but the gusty  wind made fishing the pole nearly impossible, that's another quid he's won, 7-2 now I better buck my idea's up.

4th. Bob Jarvis, Old Hatfield Angling                             peg 11            24-10-0

5th. Darren Clark, Simpsons of Turnford                       peg 14            20-10-0

This week was round four of six and the points are really going to count as the finish line is fast approaching, so all the mid table pairs only need a good result and the league table will change around...

Tony Pennycook - Gary Miller
Gary Manoli - Gordon Bullock
Darren Clark - Martin Amos
Mick Herbert - Bob Jarvis
Alan Spooner - Ken Farrell
Dave Massey - Steve Thorn
Paul Reddy - Steve Sams
Colin Tasker - Dean Hunt
Scott Clark - Colin Bartlett

Ken Farrell finds carp down the edge on peg 32 and takes all the points this week and its a result like this that can upset the league leaders...

Fourth round champ Farrell (He's not really saying a "Gottle of Geer")

23 fished

1st. Ken Farrell, Browning-Lake John                               peg 32         31-10-0
Not been on the fish of late but this man can catch those big fish and make them count, well he fished his peg long down the edge and with sweetcorn to the hook had decided to sit it out for the big ens well the carp down there weren't massive but he bagged them all the same, five carp between 3lb and 7lb and a few silver as well helped pip the Essex Boys, 20 points well done Ken.

2nd. Chris Vandervliet, Van Den Eynde-Bromages         peg 39        31-04-0
Skimmers on the short line with maggot to the hook and plenty of groundbait and micro pellet loose fed at 7m, this kept Chris busy most of the match and on a sell out match the first and second spot couldn't have been any closer, Chris also had another pound off me again, I know that he would want me to let you all know, I'II be back Mr.Chris.

3rd. Gary Miller, Van Den Eynde                                          peg 3        24-04-0
Gary has sat next to the Milo boss and Winter league sponsor and had his trousers off but only just as it was less than a pound that separated them, maggot down the edge and then out long on the 13m line for skimmers.

4th. Simon Willsmore, Milo-D+A Tackle                              peg 4         23-14-0

Gary does the business again but you should save those victory's for the weeks that count me old mate...

23 fished

1st. Gary Miller, Van Den Eynde                                         peg 39          36-06-0
Catching on the long pole and nicking fish off the feed is Gary's style and with two lines long at 13m about 7m apart this give s the fish enough space to stay in the peg without spooking too far from the hook bait, skimmers to start and if you are doing it right the bigger fish lead onto the feed for a proper bag of bites.

2nd. Chris Vandervliet, Van Den Eynde-Bromages          peg 34          30-00-0
Had my pound again this week the boy done good specially at the draw bag, there is always next week..........

3rd. Simon Willsmore, Milo-D+A Tackle                              peg 7            23-08-0
The deadly chopped worm has just stopped working so what will the Milo man be doing this Sunday, I guess there will be a change of attack.

4th. Bob Jarvis, Old Hatfield Angling                                   peg 38          22-04-0
Jnt. 4th.Martin Amos, Elite Baits-Old Hatfield Angling      peg 4             22-04-0

Round three of the series and this is the half way mark, and from now on every point will count as the leading pairs switch about once again...

Tony Pennycook - Gary Miller
Gary Manoli - Gordon Bullock
Darren Clark - Martin Amos
Mick Herbert - Bob Jarvis
Alan Spooner - Ken Farrell
Dave Massey - Steve Thorn
Paul Reddy - Steve Sams
Colin Tasker - Dean Hunt
Scott Clark - Colin Bartlett
Dennis Jarvis - Graham Hyde

The wind and rain were forecast but only the wind arrived thank god, this made the tried and tested pole line almost unbearable at full stick, this was reflection in the overall results, but there are still a few bright stars coming through the ranks and young Gary Manoli lands a 1lb 12oz roach to boost his total...

Gary and his bonus 1lb 12oz roach, we all thought it was a tench with the amount of elastic out.

27 fished

1st. Alan Hart, Lake John                                                     peg 16        19-08-0
A good peg on a windy day because it can offer a little bit of shelter from the gusting breeze, but you have still got to catch em and catch em "Al" did, worm and pellet were the choice of hook baits and switching between the two seemed to find the better fish including four tench to 3lb and a decent bream of nearly 3lb, a bed of ground bait was put down at the start and topping up the feed during the match kept the fish on the bait ready for the ambush, not loads of fish today but just enough for papa Hart...

2nd. Dean Hunt, Terrapins                                                  peg 30        19-00-0
Dean is one of those positive anglers and today was the sort of day that would just suit him, the wind was on his back and pole presentation was exceptional all things considered, but his first stroke of luck came to an early 7lb carp on the feeder, from then on it was always going to be a bit easier because all the hard work was done now it was on the pole line and pellet for a few more bites and just enough silver fish to take second place.

3rd. Chris Vandervliet, Van Den Eynde                             peg 7         16-14-0
Taking my pound again for yet another week Chris is starting to enjoy the lake and the fishing with a great start on the feeder catching skimmers and roach he continued this method for about two hours of the match before switching to the pole and maggot and being the old pro that he is, he put a few more fish together, but this week its all about league points and Mr. Chris aint in the league so the pound this week is very shallow.

4th . Graham Hyde, Simpsons of Turnford                        peg 32       15-08-0

5th. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle                         peg 39        14-14-0

Results for Sunday 6th January 2008

This is the first weekend of the New Year 2008, and a practice week as we approach the halfway mark in the third round next week. The anglers and the pegs are starting to change in performance...

So here are the pairs named and shamed:

Tony Pennycook - Gary Miller
Gary Manoli - Gordon Bullock
Darren Clark - Martin Amos     Chris Vandervliet stands in for Darren this week only
Mick Herbert - Bob Jarvis         Alan Hart stands in for Mick this week only
Alan Spooner - Ken Farrell
Dave Massey - Steve Thorn
Paul Reddy - Steve Sams
Colin Tasker - Dean Hunt        Matt Hart stands in for Colin this week only
Scott Clark - Colin Bartlett
Dennis Jarvis - Graham Hyde

This is the sort of result you need league round Mr Miller not on a practice week, amateur! hopefully he hasn't used all his luck up this week and has a howler in the third round and his partner looks to be the most improved over the series so this partnership has potential...

25 fished

1st. Gary Miller, Van Den Eynde                                       peg 10     21-12-0
This was a real slow and low scoring event for some reason the fish had just gone into shut down mode and everyone on the lake was stuggling to get a bite let alone catch, Gary probably had 3lb by the 12 o'clock mark and with no sign of a bonus fish in the peg but by using red maggot to the hook this is a sure way of getting a bite at least and true to form the better fish made a show allbeit for a brief moment, but on a day like this a couple of fish would be enough, long pole skimmers and roach with three 3 pounders in the last 30 minutes.

2nd. Simon Wilsmore, Milo-D+A Tackle                           peg 37      18-00-0
Well Simon will mind me telling you that if it wasn't for a jammy carp on the tip this 18lb would have looked a bit different, but the 10lb bonus carp was landed and the weight included to the overall net of silvers. This could have been anyone's match with a bonus fish landed as Mr Wilsmore proved and a not so well deserved 2nd place and a new year payout. A little look on the feeder but long pole with maggot and pinky to the hook.

3rd. Martin Amos, Elite Baits-Old Hatfield Angling          peg 34      17-10-0
Another solid performance from the Amos on his tried and tested pellet approach and with a decent bag of skimmers on the long pole, Martin is also a real contender in the league race and his partner is net a few fish as well so at this early stage its still any bodies title, Martin only needed a bonus fish amongst his net of blades to take first place but that's just how it goes sometimes, still you won yesterday on the bottom lake.

Round two of the Milo pairs and its too close to call as the points in the coming matches are going to be crucial, and the pecking order is going to change from week to week...

So here are the pairs named and shamed:

Tony Pennycook - Gary Miller
Gary Manoli - Gordon Bullock Dave George has been replaced by Gary Manoli for the rest of the series
Darren Clark - Martin Amos, Chris Vandervliet stands in for Darren this week only
Mick Herbert - Bob Jarvis, Alan Hart stands in for Mick this week only
Alan Spooner - Ken Farrell
Dave Massey - Steve Thorn
Paul Reddy - Steve Sams
Colin Tasker - Dean Hunt , Matt Hart stands in for Colin this week only
Scott Clark - Colin Bartlett
Dennis Jarvis - Graham Hyde

Amos finds form when it counts and this being the second round of the winter league points are very important and in the absence of his partner we drew for a reserve standing for this week only and what a draw Chris Vandervleit who is also on form at the moment...

1st. Martin Amos, Elite Baits-Old Hatfield Angling         peg 41      38-10-0
Not been in best of form on this lake lately but like the true pro that he is by hard work and sticking with it through good and bad it was only a matter of time before he would be back on the top spot, and it has to be said that when the pellet starts to produce fish again this man will always be a hard man to beat after a shakey start and holding back on the feed until a pattern had started to form Martin started to catch strong at both 13m and 9m these lines started out as maggot and by the midway mark it was 4mm pellet all the way, 3lb net bream were starting to cue up well done champ, don't make a habit of this

2nd. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle                      peg 39      31-10-0
I drew this peg in the practice last week in the freezing fog so I was quiet happy about having the last peg in the bag, a fairly good start on the roach at 6m netting a 3oz fish every put on the caster but this was just my way of allowing the long line to settle for the assault that was going to happen after an hour or so of resting it, skimmers to the maggot to start but then it was a quick change to the pellet on a 4x16 rig with 0.10 hook length and an 18 hook, but this week I was out classed by the Amos on the next peg, wait until next week...

3rd. Chris Vandervleit, Bromages-Van Den Eynde        peg 4       31-08-0
What can I say my hero Chris bets a quid with me every time we fish on the same match and the rule is that its a fiver if we are drawn next to each other well having had two quid of me in the last two matches this was a very important match to me to keep him quiet, and 2oz's is just the sort of victory to shut him up, The Essex boy was on the phone to me that evening telling me how lucky I was, I told him I was in a restaurant spending his Alan Wicker and the food had never tasted so good, Unlucky Chris you nearly done it, caster short on the inner margins and maggot long at 13m over ground bait.

Another practice match and this morning the lake was frozen solid again, this was never going to be a high scoring event, Chris Vandervleit takes the crown with a near 20lb on the scales....

1st. Chris Vandervleit, Bromages-Van Den Eynde               peg 32      19-04-0
Ice all over the lake up to 20 minutes before the match draw was to be held, it was a lottery what pegs we would be able to use so I manned the boat and began to break the ice so everyone had a fair chance of a days fishing one hour of pre-match exercise meant that the match was on, Chris is back on form and the draw has been kind again in the deep water is where you need to be and this is probably one of the deepest pegs on the lake, single maggot and plenty of groundbait got a few fish feeding in his peg, another pound he has won off me, look after them Chris they will be coming back...

2nd. Scott Clark, Simpsons of Turnford                                  peg 3        18-12-0
This man is my partner in the pairs and this is just the sort of practice week you need to boost your moral, well done big man you looked like you had everything very smooth and at one stage the fish were lined up one a bung, maggot again for Scotty on the long pole 16m was never going to be a problem for this larger than life character pictured above with a near 2lb roach, fishing 16m he could very nearly cup his bait in from his own front garden in Cuffley.

3rd. Gary Manoli, Fox Match                                                     peg 34      18-00-0
Young Gary makes his first appearence on the lake since he done a feature in the Southern Angler at the end of the summer, in which he managed to make the front cover, long pole and maggot for this young ace skimmers and bream again.

4th. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle                               peg 39      14-06-0

5th. Martin Amos, Elite Baits-Old Hatfield Angling                peg 31       13-10-0

The Start of the Milo Pairs and this was a low scoring event on a bitter cold day and with all the mid week ice water melted into the lake this was always going to be a challenging day on the bank...

So here are the pairs named and shamed:

Tony Pennycook - Gary Miller
Dave George - Gordon Bullock
Darren Clark - Martin Amos
Micky Herbert - Bob Jarvis
Alan Spooner - Ken Farrell
Dave Massey - Steve Thorn
Paul Reddy - Steve Sams
Colin Tasker - Dean Hunt
Scott Clark - Colin Bartlett
Dennis Jarvis - Graham Hyde

Van Den Eynde's Mr. Miller takes the first place but he was chased all the way by Steve Sams on the next peg...

1st. Gary Miller, Van Den Eynde                                  peg 14         28-04-0
Gary started on the tip and probably left it too long before looking on the long pole where he had all his action at 14m with maggot to the hook mainly, pinky if it got really tough, but by steadily plugging away this was just the ticket on the day, so keep busy as the ounce's soon become pounds, skimmers, roach and perch...

2nd. Steve Sams, Lake John                                        peg 13         26-10-0
Steve had it all his own way early on in the match but you can't afford any quiet spells and that is what has cost Steve the match, fishing the maggot also at 7m there was a bag of bites for Steve on his long awaited return.

3rd. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle                   peg 16         20-10-0
Started well and mid match over done the feed and killed the peg silly boy, skimmers and other silvers worm and pellet.

This was the final practice week, and next week we get serious, so a final reminder to all, names must be in for the first league match next week, this event will be in the form of a pairs match on the top lake...

20 Fished

1st. Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle                       peg 32       28-08-0
Well sorry chaps I am only keeping it simple and be very careful with the feed less is best, no big bait bills honest 30 worm heads 1 pint of caster and a bag of ground bait, the real trick is finding the fish and then keeping them, you will start catching them off the feed but during the match they will be onto of the feed and bingo you can really put a few fish together, skimmers and bream all to a tip of worm, next week we do it all for real.

2nd. Steve Thorn, Simpson of Turnford                          peg 41       18-04-0
Last week Steve admitted to doing it all wrong, wrong bait and to much feed but after a few pointers from the regulars this was a different story this week, worm to the hook and a bit of groundbait was the recipe for a match winning performance, the only thing that kept the weight down was the ability to present in the wind.

3rd. Chris Vanderflit, Bromages                                       peg 33       17-08-0
This is a proper winter peg with everything you could wish for, inner margin features and a proven long pole peg in this weeks mid week open where it was the winning peg, but my mate Chris was not a well man and not it then right frame of mind for the job in hand, but still a days sport on a horrible wet and windy day, but all that aside i still won his pound, ha, ha, ha

4th. George Blackburn, Simpsons of Turnford               peg 13       11-14-0

5th. Dicky Carr, Drennan-Spring lakes                             peg 39       11-00-0

6th. Dennis Jarvis, Pro Master-Trabbucco                       peg 14       10-04-0

This was the first week of the Milo Masters practice for the four coming winter league series and on the wettest day ever it was not one bit comfortable let me tell ya....

16 Fished

1st.Colin Bartlett, Lake John-J+B Tackle                         peg 38        26-08-0
A few anglers dropped out after they had seen the weather forecast and who can blame them because it just blew and blew and the it rained and rained some more, there were a few fish feeding it was presentation the kept the weights down I held on for dear life and braved it without a brolly, there were a few fish to be had and at the end of it but it was most uncomfortable, practice makes perfect so we go into next weeks final practice with a little bit of knowledge of what to do for the best, for me it was 0.10 hook length to an 18 hook with a tail of worm to the hook and ground bait is the key to a bag of silvers. I would like to take this opportunity to remember Don Spinks local councillor and Holyfield's Fishery boss who passed away on Monday 3rd December and our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones from, Philomena Shinkins, Karen and Colin and kids.

2nd. Steve Briggs, Terrapins                                             peg 14       18-08-0
Briggsy holds his own on his first match on the lake since last winter and does the business on a peg that would have had the wind and the rain blowing directly into him all match so well done to that Terrapin.

3rd. Dennis Jarvis, Pro Master-Trabbucco                       peg 7         18-04-0
Second yesterday on the bottom lake and bridesmaid again today but this is valuable practice for the league and Dennis looks like he is going to be a force to recon with this winter, worm and caster on a shorter pole line...

4th. Alan Hart, Lake John                                                    peg 39      16-06-0

5th. Martin Amos, Elite Baits-Old Hatfield Angling          peg 11       13-14-0

6th, Scott Clark, Simpsons of Turnford                             peg 29        8-08-0
